Then back to the docks and time for some BBQ, raffles and the awards presentations.  After a long day, back to the limo and home for certainly a good night’s sleep.

The Organizers would like to thank all the donators, sponsors and volunteers who helped make this event a sucess.  We hope to see you all again next year.

If nothing else, we all came away with a happy heart.  Fair winds and we hope to see you on the water.

FUN WAS HAD BY ALL - FRIDAY 22 JULY, 2011

A benefit for La Maestra Community Health Centers "Healthy Choices" program and for the children of the community.

The children who were recomended to attend La Maestra's "Healthy Choices" program were eligable to be part of this Summer Sail event.  This was after completion of a 5 week course.  A chance in a lifetime to sail on a 27 ft sailboat on San Diego's Bay.

Parents were invited and the day started with a limousine pickup at La Maestra Community Health Center in City Heights.  Once they arrived at Harbor Island Yacht Club, they were put into teams and assigned their boat, skipper and crew, then off to class.

Manny Moreno, of Reality Sailing and an ASA instructor taught them basics of sailing and the Coast Guard Auxiliary talked about boat safety.

Fabrison’s French Creperie Café in Little Italy sponsored the lunch and Viva Pops provided desert.  West Marine was kind enough to outfit each kid with a pair of sailing gloves. Then off to the docks to put what they learned to use on the water.  Practice, practice, tacks and jibes, and hands-on at the wheel.  As they practiced the course was set for a two race series.  Who was to win, Team Orange, Blue or Yellow?

Team Orange was ahead at the start but the tide was not with them and they nudged the first mark.  A racing NO NO!  This meant they had to do a 360 turn before the finish.  As a result they came in second with Team Yellow coming in first and Team Blue third.

Not to worry, a second race had all boats with a great start and Team Orange took first, Team Blue took second and Team Yellow third.  This made the overall standings; Team Orange First Place, Team Yellow Second Place and Team Blue Third place.

Fraser Yachts donated the spectator boat (yacht), and what a yacht it was.  Restored 1962 vintage, impeccable!  After a little tour of the bay, the captain and owner of the yacht took the families to the course so they could watch the races start and finish, while Lori Brookes of Lori Brookes Photography captured the race from a chase boat.

A day certainly to remember!  Oh, and not to forget the pods of dolphins in the Bay.  A sailors good luck omen.
